The next generation of High Speed Media ( 4x DVD-R , 2x DVD-RW , released by DVD Forum at September 17,2002 ) would be possible damage 2108VR, and the new firmware ( v1.32 ) can avoid the potential issue, but the firmware would force to reduce the high speed DVD-R/RW to 1x only. P.S. Please pay attention that the firmware v1.32 can't be reverted to older version anymore.
